Manchester City took a giant step towards the semi-finals of the Champions League as they beat Real Madrid 2-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final tie at the Etihad Stadium.

Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus scored the goals to give City a healthy advantage to take to the Bernabeu next week.

Real Madrid were the better side for much of the first half but they were unable to take their chances.

City grew into the game and took the lead in the 37th minute when De Bruyne fired home a low drive from the edge of the area.

Jesus doubled the lead in the 73rd minute with a close-range finish after good work from Raheem Sterling.

Real Madrid had a chance to get back into the game in the 83rd minute but Karim Benzema's penalty was saved by Ederson.

City held on to secure a vital victory and they will be confident of finishing the job in the second leg.
